Choosing the Right Wedding Band Profile

Weight and Feel

Wedding rings are available in light, medium or heavy weights which is actually referring to the depth of metal rather than just grams.

A medium weight is typically the most popular choice which offers an ideal balance of comfort, durability and long-term investment.

D-Shape

Flat on the inside and domed on the outside which is classic, neat and traditional.

Put simply, the cross-section of the ring appears with the same shape as the letter D.

Most variations of this wedding ring style provide a different thickness. As such most styles fall into light, medium or heavyweight alternatives. In addition, some styles provide a curved comfort fit within the ring whilst maintaining the distinctive D-shaped profile.

Court Profile

Around 95% of the wedding rings we craft are court style. Characterised by a softly rounded exterior and a gently curved interior for comfort, it allows the ring to sit snugly on the finger while reducing friction and pressure points. The court profile offers:

  • Exceptional comfort for daily wear that easily slides over the knuckle
  • A timeless, traditional aesthetic with a slightly softened look as opposed to harsh, sharp edges.
  • A reassuring weight and durability as court rings often feel heavy than those with flat profiles due to the added metal needed for the curvature.

Variations Within the Court Family

Variations within the Court family:

  • Traditional Court – Fully rounded inside and out.
  • Flat Court – Modern flat exterior with a comfort-fit interior.
  • Slight Court – A softer, more subtle dome.
  • Engagement Match Court – Designed to sit perfectly flush against an engagement ring for a seamless fit.

Flat Section Band

A bold, geometric design with flat surfaces throughout. Contemporary, bold, clean and often described as industrial in style and slightly firmer in feel than rounded styles.

A flat section wedding band is a modern, minimalist ring design characterised by a rectangular cross-section. It is distinguished by having a flat, straight surface on the exterior top, flat sides and a flat interior and is a modern, minimalist style that is a discerning choice for many.

Diamond Set Wedding Bands

A diamond wedding band symbolises enduring, unbreakable love as diamonds are the hardest natural material on earth and therefore represent a bond that withstands time and life’s challenges.

They exude elegance as their sparkle complements any engagement ring effortlessly. They also offer versatility in styles such as eternity, pavé and channel set, all with long-term durability for everyday wear. A beautiful heirloom to pass through generations.

Tiara and Shaped Wedding Bands:

Shaped Wedding Bands

When an engagement ring has a lower setting sometimes these will not sit flush with a straight wedding band. That’s where shaped bands come in. These bands can either be plain or diamond set and are carefully designed to contour around engagement rings to creating a seamless fit. They follow every curve of your engagement ring, ensuring no gaps and a secure and comfortable fit as a cohesive bridal set that were always meant to be paired together.

Tiara Wedding Bands

Featuring elegant curves, peaks or stone-set waves, tiara rings create a delicate crown-like silhouette where more even sparkle adorns the finger. Romantic, refined and everlasting with a romantic, regal feel to them.

While often featuring round brilliant diamonds, these rings can also incorporate marquise, pear or baguette cuts to create more intricate crown-like effects for a modern bridal look. Perfect for brides who want something decorative, yet timeless.

Bespoke Wedding Rings

Our bespoke service allows you to create something truly unique together.

From redesigning inherited jewellery to crafting a completely original pair of wedding rings, we combine traditional craftsmanship with modern technologies such as CAD design and precision casting. Each piece is hand-finished with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring exceptional quality and a ring that will be treasured for generations.

There is something profoundly meaningful about designing your rings as a couple where two stories fuse together to create one shared future.

Designing Your Wedding band – The Steps

A wedding ring marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, where two become one. For many couples, designing a ring together makes the experience even more meaningful, resulting in a piece that reflects both personal style and shared story.

At Ainsworth Jewellers, we guide you through each step of the journey, combining traditional craftsmanship with thoughtful, personal consultation.

Step One: The Conversation

Every bespoke ring begins with a conversation. During your consultation, we take time to understand your ideas, preferences, lifestyle and of course, the engagement ring and how the band needs to sit alongside it.

Some clients arrive with clear inspiration, while others simply know how they want the ring to feel classic, contemporary, romantic or entirely unique.

We’ll explore design styles, shapes, metal choices and practical considerations to ensure the ring suits everyday wear as well as long-term comfort.

Step Two: Selecting the Band – with diamonds, coloured gemstones or plain

Just like when choosing a bridal gown, we encourage all brides to try different styles of rings, even those they may not have considered before. They key is to creating a match made in heaven between both the wedding band and engagement ring.

If you decide on coloured gemstones or diamonds, we guide you through cut, colour, clarity and carat weight, explaining how each element affects both appearance and value.

Step Three: Bringing the Design to Life

Once the stone, shape and design direction are agreed, detailed sketches or digital visuals help bring the concept to life. At this stage, elements such as band shape, setting style and additional stones are refined, ensuring the final design feels perfectly balanced. Once we have the CAD drawings, more magic happens as we bring the ring to life with a 3D wax model to try.

Step Four: Craftsmanship and Creation

Your ring is then handcrafted by skilled jewellers, using techniques that ensure both beauty and durability. Attention is paid not only to what is seen, but also to the unseen details that make a ring comfortable and secure for everyday wear.

This stage transforms the design from concept into a piece destined to become part of your family history.

Step Five: The Moment It’s Revealed

Seeing the finished piece for the first time that has been crafted specifically for you, is a moment many clients never forget.

From first conversation to final reveal, our aim is to make the experience enjoyable, reassuring and personal, resulting in a ring that will be treasured for a lifetime.

Engraving: A Private Sentiment

Engraving your wedding bands transforms a beautiful ring into something deeply personal. Whether it’s your wedding date, initials, meaningful coordinates or a phrase only you understand, the message inside becomes your shared secret.

There are a host of fonts available for this or we can also replicate your own handwriting for a truly personal touch. Unique wording, chosen by you that is perhaps from the proposal, a love letter or simply saying ‘I love you’ capturing not just the words, but the emotion behind them.
