Guidance for Grooms
- Consider width carefully: too slim may feel delicate; too wide can appear heavy or old fashioned.
- Comfort is essential, particularly if you are new to wearing rings.
- Match with a favourite watch or complement your partner’s ring and consider a matching set of his and hers wedding bands instead
Guidance for Brides
- Complement your engagement ring without overwhelming it.
- Choose the same metal for harmony and consider the size as bands that are too wide will distract from the star of the show.
- Consider sizing carefully as wearing two rings together may require adjustment.
Consider Your Skin Tone and even your veins
There is no strict rule, only what feels right so it’s important to try on as many as you can. Cooler skin tones often complement the crisp brightness of white metals, while yellow or rose gold can add warmth and richness. Some clients prefer the contrast and others want a tone that feels as though it naturally belongs on their hand.
Looking deeper than skin tone, what about your veins? It may sound odd but by looking at the colour of your veins it can help you decide whether gold or silver actually suits you better.
To check which colour your veins are, just take a close look at either you your wrist or your elbow. Are they mainly blue? If they are then your skin has a cool undertone and silver jewellery suits you best. Or, are they more of a green colour? If your veins have the greener colour coming through then your skin has a warm undertone and gold jewellery looks more beautiful on you.
Our advice? Try everything. Keep an open mind. The right metal is the one that feels unmistakably yours.
Matching Your Engagement Ring
We would always recommend choosing the same precious metal as your engagement ring. While opinions vary on how metals react when worn together, best practice is to match them. It ensures a harmonious look and avoids uneven wear over time.
For gentlemen, a wedding ring is often the first and only piece of jewellery worn on their hand and so you may wish to consider how it will complement a favourite watch or meaningful accessory instead.
Understanding Gold: Carat & Colour
Choosing a gold carat is a balance of beauty, strength and investment.
- 22ct Gold – Luxuriously rich in colour, almost buttery in appearance. Beautiful, silky, but softer and requiring mindful wear.
- 18ct Gold – The finest balance of richness, strength and durability. Our most popular choice for quality wedding jewellery.
- 9ct Gold – More affordable and durable, though lighter in colour and sometimes slightly brassy in tone.
As the gold content increases, so does both the depth of colour and the price.
Rose Gold
Rose gold, created by adding copper to yellow gold, offers a romantic blush tone and increased strength. It provides a beautiful contrast to white diamonds and remains a luxurious, contemporary choice.
Platinum or White Gold?
As the rarest and purest of precious metals, platinum is naturally white, hypoallergenic and exceptionally strong. Its density gives it reassuring weight, and its unique ‘liquid surface’ means that rather than chipping away when scratched, the metal simply moves and can be refinished back into place.
White gold, by contrast, is lighter in weight and is often rhodium plated to enhance its whiteness, though this plating will naturally wear over time and may require renewal, typically every 12 months depending on wear.
All precious metals will mark with time. We believe this is part of their story. Just as life brings its moments and milestones, so too will your rings carry the gentle signs of hard knocks over the years shared together. It may seem a little odd, but we are actually quite fond of the worn and scratched appearance of jewellery and find this quite symbolic.
Over polishing over time will also (in the case of gold), remove some of the surface layers. We would however safely advise that you can polish your engagement ring just before your wedding to match and ensure they ‘age’ at the same time. It is also not detrimental to polish rings at special anniversaries such as 10 years or at 25 years, a lovely gesture for a silver wedding anniversary.
Ultimately, this guidance is here to help you make an informed choice we would suggest you always visit the store to try on and always choose what you genuinely love and feel proud to wear every day.
