What is a Lab-Grown Diamond?
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond.
Chemically, physically and optically identical to a natural diamond, it possesses the same crystal structure responsible for its exceptional hardness, fire, brilliance and sparkle. The only difference is its origin.
Natural diamonds are formed deep beneath the earth’s surface over billions of years, while lab-grown diamonds are created in carefully controlled conditions over a matter of weeks using either High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) technology.
A gemstone by definition is Rare, Durable and Beautiful. Although without question, lab-grown diamonds are as hard and tough and as beautiful as a natural diamond they are not rare.
Therefore simply put a lab grown diamond is a diamond but not a gemstone. Both are genuine diamonds but one is created by nature and one by science.
Can You Tell the Difference?
Simply put, no, you cannot tell the difference.
Even under a jeweller’s 10x loupe, it is impossible to distinguish a lab-grown diamond from a natural diamond.
The difference can only be identified using advanced gemmological screening equipment that analyses trace elements and crystal growth patterns at an atomic level.

Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds – The Four Key Differences
Origin
Natural diamonds are created naturally over billions of years beneath the Earth’s surface.
Lab-grown diamonds are produced above ground in a highly controlled environment using advanced technology over several weeks.
Price
Lab-grown diamonds are significantly cheaper than natural diamonds of comparable size and quality, making them an attractive option for many buyers.
Rarity and Prestige
Natural diamonds are finite and exceptionally rare, giving them a unique prestige and enduring heirloom appeal.
Lab-grown diamonds deliver the same beauty and performance but are not naturally rare.
Resale Value
Natural diamonds have historically retained a higher percentage of their original value over time.
Lab-grown diamonds are typically purchased for their beauty, quality and affordability rather than their investment potential.
Which Diamond is Right for You?
There is no right or wrong choice. Choose a diamond that best suits your priorities and budget.
Choose a Natural Diamond if:
- You value rarity and geological history
- You’re looking for a traditional heirloom piece
- Long-term resale value is an important consideration
Choose a Lab-Grown Diamond if:
- You want maximum size and brilliance for your budget
- You appreciate a traceable, non-mining origin
- You want exceptional clarity and colour without compromise
Our experienced team is always happy to explain the differences and help you make an informed decision.
